Accessible to all

Access keys are available

Links to frequently visited pages in the Oo Kingdom have keyboard shortcuts known as access keys. The keys are defined below and on every page of the site, either near the top of the navigation bar (in parentheses) or at the bottom of the page (indicated by a bold capital letter).

[1] Not included are picture pages in Ummamum’s Picture Place.
[2] On Ummamum’s Picture Place, access key u leads to the home page of that site.
[3] Works on all browsers that support access keys, but is only visible on older browsers and alternate Internet devices such as phone browsers.

Other access keys are defined on pages that use them.

Pages are printer-friendly

Many Web pages do not print well. Some websites use a link that says “Print this page”—the link will lead to a text-only page or even a plain text document. This site doesn’t need such a link; every page is already printer-friendly, thanks to printer-specific styling. This page, printed from a good browser, will not include the navigation menu or other unwanted elements. Easy-to-read fonts are used in the printout, and the colors are reset to black and white.

Links are friendly

  1. Text links to other sites are highlighted in color on all browsers which support style sheets.
  2. Many links have title attributes which give information about the nature of the link. This information will appear as a mouse-over tool tip in most visual browsers and may be spoken by speech synthesizers.
  3. There are no links that open new windows without warning.

Text is marked up properly

  1. All font sizes used on this site are relative (not in pixels or points) so that anyone can resize the text if they choose.
  2. Short quotes are marked up with quotation marks, and longer quotes are marked up with blockquote.
  3. Citations or references to other resources are marked up with the cite element. They will appear in italics on most browsers.
  4. A defining instance of a term (such as Heaven and Hell on The Way to Eternal Life, in a Nutshell) is marked up with dfn. These will appear in italics on most browsers.
  5. Emphasis is denoted by the em element (text will appear in italics); stronger emphasis (seldom used on this site) is denoted by the strong element (text will appear in bold type).
  6. Abbreviations and acronyms are marked up with the acronym element at the first occurrence on a page or in a section of a page. A title attribute is included to describe what the term means. On most of today’s browsers, the item will get a dotted underline, and the help cursor (usually a question mark) will appear when you hover on it. Let the mouse linger there for a second, and a tool tip should appear to give the expanded meaning of the term.
  7. Fragments of computer code (including examples of HTML, CSS and JavaScript) shown as content on our pages are marked up with the code element. Samples of output from programs or scripts are marked up with samp, and examples of text to be entered by the user (such as for the access keys, above) are marked up with kbd (for keyboard). Visual browsers will display these in a typewriter-style font.
  8. Any changes in the language (French words, for example) are marked up with the xml:lang or lang attribute (depending on the browser in use).

Any browser works fine

New designs are tested on a variety of browsers to sniff out any quirks that may need correcting. Our content is accessible to any Web browser or Internet device, although it is impossible to make it look identical on all of them.

Layout fails gracefully

Layout is accomplished entirely with CSS. Content is structured logically so that if CSS is not supported and the layout breaks, the pages will still make sense.

Our pages load quickly and work on any screen

Our pages are designed to be flexible, so they will wrap to any screen size (some pages may display a horizontal scrollbar in small windows). Pages are also kept relatively light on graphics to ensure quick loading (a few pages on Ummamum’s Picture Place are as heavy as 117 kilobytes; most are much lighter).

Technology is kept simple

The Oo Kingdom uses only hypertext (XHTML), images (GIF and JPEG), style sheets (CSS) and basic JavaScript (JS). We do not use applets or Flash, since we see no use for these technologies on our site. Embedded sound files are only used in our Ummamum’s Surprise section.

We also use PHP on the server to customize the markup for the browser in use. For example, XHTML is converted to HTML for older browsers, and curly punctuation marks and dashes are converted to straight marks for WebTV and cell phone users.

Safe

Content is safe

This site is labeled with the ICRA (Internet Content Rating Assocation). The labeling works with nearly all Internet filtering systems. Nearly all of the site is free of questionable subject matter and is labeled as child-safe; only a few selected pages are labeled with minimal restrictions.

Privacy is ensured

We do not collect personally identifiable information from our visitors. IP addresses which appear in our website statistics are used only to determine how many people visit our site and their country of origin, for purposes of traffic analysis. We do not share this information with anyone else. We are strongly opposed to unsolicited email (spam), hacking and similar practices.

We respect the privacy of others, and we do not publish names, photographs or other personal information without prior permission.

However, we disclaim all warranties

Although we go to great lengths to ensure the quality, accuracy and tastefulness of all content on ookingdom.com, all such content is provided “as is” and without warranties of fitness for any particular purpose. We shall not be held liable for any failure or damage resulting from the use of our conversion tools or calculators or anything else found on ookingdom.com. Moreover, we do not warrant the accuracy, reliability, or availability of our content. Material found on externally linked sites is by nature beyond our control; therefore we accept no liability for their content. If you find objectionable content via an external link, or an error in our own content, please contact us so we may fix the problem.

Standards compliant

Markup is valid

Each page is written in valid XHTML 1.1, and each style sheet is valid CSS. They are re-validated whenever changes are made to ensure that no errors creep in.

The XHTML is automatically converted to HTML 4.01 Strict for legacy browsers, including Internet Explorer 6 and earlier.

Pages meet accessibility standards

All pages on ookingdom.com also conform to the U.S. Federal Government Section 508 accessibility guidelines.
