Taj Mahal: Great Indian Cuisine

Today my wife and I ate lunch at Taj Mahal, an Indian restaurant that recently opened at 2624 Humes Rd. in Janesville, Wisconsin. Though I had eaten Indian dishes from the grocery store — some frozen and some packaged — nothing compares to the bold, complex and intricate flavors you will experience at this fine restaurant. At their lunch buffet (which is actually quite small) there are a pleasant variety of dishes, including Chicken Tandoori, Chicken Tikka Masala (with a delicious reddish cream sauce), Goat Curry, two types of fritters with vegetables in them, Palak Paneer (a spinach dish; theirs is served with potatoes), along with fruits (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple), salads, several varieties of chutney, and desserts, including mango ice cream and Kheer, which is rice cooked in sweetened condensed milk (their version of rice pudding, but more like a soup). Their flatbread is to die for. I had their hot masala tea, and that had a delightful flavor of its own.

Some of the dishes are spicy; the hottest one I tasted was made from black beans and kidney beans, and though it was hot, it was still delicious.

Even the music and the architecture of the building add to the mood. The lunch buffet price of $9.95 is higher than some buffets, but the exquisite food and dining experience is well worth it. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is up for a genuine taste adventure.
