Wendi and Joe engage in a game of checkers on Sunday, July 1.

We saw Wendi’s mother twice: first on Saturday afternoon, and again late Sunday morning.

She can only speak in a whisper. She can only eat ice cream or Jell-O. She looked very weak and sickly, and to make matters worse, her roommate passed away early Sunday morning. I told her that we were glad to see her but wished that it could have been under better circumstances. “I do too,” she whispered back, then added, “I don’t know how long I have left.”
