Stormy’s Last Days / Page 6 of 6

Finally they came in and started a catheter in her leg, which was actually a port through which a sedative, then a euthanizing agent, would be administered.

After that, Wendi held Stormy for a bit, and then I held her. But suddenly, I felt something warm on my leg. Stormy had peed on me! To me, this was another clear sign that she was very ill.

Dr. Mike had explained that Stormy, for some unknown reason, had lost so much muscle mass that her strength was now gone; though her breathing and heart sounded okay, she was very ill, and there was likely nothing they could do to help her; euthanasia was the best option.

We watched and stroked Stormy as the doctor administered the sedative, then the euthanizing agent, then listened to her heart as it stopped beating. “She’s gone,” he finally announced. It was 4:51 pm. Her eyes remained open; Dr. Mike noted that this usually happens, though it is “weird.”

We had to say goodbye to our sweet Stormy at 4:51 pm on Monday. She declined very quickly after hanging on for some time. After 18-1/2 years of cats at our house—over 17 of them with Stormy—we came home to an empty house.
