Today was the first time Wendi was clearly diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease; it appears to be the cause of her cognitive problems such as memory lapses, speech difficulties and possibly some of her ADD symptoms.
The balance difficulties, the doctor said, could be caused by diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. The “jerk-type movements” were of particular concern to Wendi, as she has been knocking things off the bedside table in her sleep lately, so it’s good news that these are not Huntington’s-related. In fact, Dr. Dent has yet to detect any chorea type movements that are characteristic of the disease, but only cognitive problems; this means that Wendi is in a very early stage of Huntington’s at this time.
